Sometimes we have to take a gamble with photography. And so it was with this shot. Back in August I had visited Durdle Door on the Dorset Coast, UK, and had spoken with a local who told me that for a very short time around the winter solstice, the sunrise is viewable through the arch. I was instantly determined to capture the shot and booked a room in one of the very few nearby hotels for two nights just after Christmas. The chances of getting a clear morning on one of these days in winter was unlikely… The gamble, however, paid off! As the unique event unfolded, I set the camera to f/16 to capture the sun star and tried to also incorporated the arc of footprints into the shot.
